The songs, which remained off air during electioneering of star campaigners of the party, are once again being heard during street campaigns of DMK nominees, in their respective constituencies, through autorickshaws and vans.

Keralite wins gold at south Asian Wushu tourney

Aniyan Midhun of Nattika won the gold at the South Asian Wushu Championship that concluded in Nepal on March 31. The 28-year-old youth represented the country in the 70-kg category in the championship.

He is the first Wushu player from southern India to reach the Indian team.

“It is a dream come true for me. I am happy that I could make my country proud,” he said.

Shah in Wayanad today

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will address a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) election meeting at the Sreekandappa Gowder memorial stadium at Meenangadi in the district at 1.30 p.m. on Friday.

It will be Mr. Shah’s first election campaign in the district for the Assembly election, BJP northern zone general secretary K. Sadanandan said in a release.

NPCI bill payment arm starts operations

The National Payments Corporation of India’s (NPCI) wholly owned subsidiary, NPCI Bharat BillPay Ltd. (NBBL), set up to offer recurring payment services to customers, has started operations. The brand’s services would include payment of electricity, telecom, DTH, gas, education fee, water and municipal tax

bills, among others.

‘18.5 mn trees felled for roads’

A whopping 18.5 million trees have been felled for widening of roads whereas the loss has been compensated by plantation of only 2.9 million trees in Odisha during the past one decade.

The numbers came to light when Forest Minister Bikram Keshari Arukha furnished a reply to a query in the State Assembly earlier this week.

March trade deficit widens to $14.11 billion

India’s trade deficit in goods widened to $14.11 billion in March from $9.98 billion in the year-earlier period, preliminary data released by the government on Thursday showed.

Merchandise exports rose 58.2% in March to $34 billion, while imports climbed 52.9% to $48.12 billion, the data showed.

New Collector takes charge

The new Collector for Karur district, Prashant M Wadnere, assumed office on Friday.

Former Collector S. Malarvizhi has been posted as Joint Director of Tangedco, a non-election post, under the instructions of Election Commission of India.

Mr. Prashant had earlier served as Collector of Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore and Kanniyakumari districts.

49 cases in Salem

As many as 49 COVID-19 positive cases were reported in Salem on Friday. As per bulletin, all cases were indigenous.

Erode district reported 46 new cases, taking the district’s tally to 15,425. While 26 persons were discharged, 213 continue to be under treatment.

In Namakkal, 20 cases were reported. Six patients have returned from Bengaluru, Rajasthan, Salem, Erode and Hyderabad.

Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India (CREDAI) postponed the 10th edition of Hyderabad property show in view of the government banning public gatherings and events till April 30 after the rising cases of COVID. The revised schedule will be shared following appropriate government notifications, a press release said on Friday.

EPFO gives pension orders

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) gave away pension payment orders to retiring employees of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Bharat Heavy Electricals and Ashok Leyland as part of PRAYAAS scheme on Thursday. The orders were given to the retiring employees by Sudhir Kumar Jaiswal, Regional PF Commissioner-II (pension), regional office, Chennai north, the release said.
