Abhinandan, Captain America attract crowd at Yercaud flower show

Over 2.5 lakh varieties of flowers are on display at the three-day festival

Class IX student R.Rajashekaran, who was inspired by the heroic stories about wing commander Abhinandan Varthaman, was thrilled seeing a floral decoration of an MiG 21 aircraft and a life size cut-out of Abhinandhan next to it. He had a memorable experience at the 44th Yercaud summer festival as he got to click pictures with ‘Abhinandan and his aircraft’ at the flower show.

From Abhinandhan to Marvel comics hero Captain America, the Yercaud summer festival and the flower show this year had displays that would be of interest to the people of all ages.

The three-day summer festival was inaugurated by Director of Horticulture Department, N.Subbaiyan, at Anna Park in the presence of Collector Rohini R.Bhajibhakare and other senior district administration officials.

Ms. Bhajibhakare said, “over 2.5 lakh varieties of flowers are on display and events such as photography contest are being organised this year.” She added that basic amenities were ensured at all venues of the festival.

Floral structures

Floral structures of Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. MGR central railway station, a replica of cricket world cup, the antagonist from Avengers series, hand of Thanos with the infinity stones, a penguin family, and a globe are also on display at Anna Park, the main venue.

According to Horticulture Department officials, over 50,000 red and white roses were used to decorate the MiG 21 aircraft. Over 1 lakh roses of different varieties were used to decorate the structure of central railway station. It was perhaps the tallest structure at the festival.

Yellow and white roses decorated the world cup. The globe was decorated with Asparagus plant to spread the message of green earth.

Besides, a selfie booth decorated with flowers and an horticulture exhibition are added attractions.


A display of horticulture wealth from across the State such as turmeric from Erode, cashews from Cuddalore and also the local produces such as coffee, pepper, orange, avacado and chikku formed part of the event.

Vegetable and fruit carvings and a huge Red Fort made out of varieties of vegetables also attracted tourists.

The opening day witnessed huge crowd at the venue. Besides Anna Park, floral beds have been arranged at lake park, rose park and government botanical garden here.

According to horticulture officials, over 20,000 flower pots have been arranged at other parks besides the main venue.

The event will conclude on Sunday.
