“Today” show contributor Jill Martin and longtime love Erik Brooks are engaged, following a marriage proposal that she exclusively told Page Six was the biggest surprise of her life.
Together nearly two years, Brooks proposed to Martin, 43, last Thursday in the Hamptons where he surprised her with both of their families, including his three children.
“I’m shaking,” she exclusively told Page Six over the phone on Tuesday. “I’m over the moon. I have not stopped staring at [my engagement ring]. I wake up in the middle of the night and think, ‘Was that a dream?’”
Brooks, a banker, designed Martin’s ring with her longtime friend and jewelry designer Jennifer Miller.
“They were in cahoots for about three months,” Martin told us, adding that she was genuinely shocked by the proposal because she always manages to figure things out ahead of time.
“I’ve never in my life been surprised,” she shared. “I’m like a detective.”
Brooks, whom she met on a dating app, popped the question with the help of their friend Jodie, who planned a fake beach party that served as the setting for his proposal. Instead of the “casual party” Martin had expected, Brooks had set up a large tent filled with candles, flowers and framed photos of the couple from over the course of their relationship.
“I started hysterically crying and it was a few minutes that I understood what was going on,” she said. “I had never experienced anything like that in 43 years. To say I was happy and overjoyed — they were, of course, tears of happiness, but I could cry telling the story right now.”
She added, “It was almost like a storybook. I love that I was absolutely myself. I was in sneakers and a jean jacket, and I had my makeup done from the ‘Today’ show.”
The only downside — or so Martin thought — to the proposal was that Brooks’ parents couldn’t be there, as they spend half the year living in Florida. What she didn’t know was that he had secretly arranged for them to surprise her after he proposed.
“His parents had surprised me from Florida. I was hysterical. I was just so happy and then the next day … I had a house of 20 people sleeping on blow-up mattresses and celebrating,” Martin said, noting that her family, his family and his children all stayed with them throughout Memorial Day weekend.
“My feet have not touched the ground.”
They haven’t started thinking about actual wedding planning just yet because Martin is just soaking up the excitement of the moment.
“If I were to create a character in a storybook, he’s who I would’ve created,” she told us. “I have never been engaged before, so to me this sort of feels like — I can’t imagine better than this.”
In April, Martin opened up to Page Six about her decision to freeze her eggs.
